Sheila Marcia Opens Her Mouth about The Baby

After giving birth to her first baby, named Leiticia Charlotte Agraciana Joseph, at Harapan Bunda Hospital, East Jakarta, Sheila Marcia finally expressed how she felt.

"The presence of a baby is extraordinary. I can't express it in words, but for sure she will bring a change in my life and I believe she will be a blessing and will give me strength in my life."

Sheila feels that her normal delivery has made her a complete woman. "I can deliver normally, I'm proud to be a complete woman who is able to feel the child birth process. I could really feel the struggle of being a mother, it was heavy. But it was all worth it when I saw my baby."

What did she feel when she first saw her baby? "I was touched. I didn't know what to do. It was amazing to see such an adorable baby. I have such such a cute baby," she said happily, without brushing on the topic of the child's biological father.

Too bad Sheila, who still needed intensive care, was only available to make a statement without a Q & A session for the press

Apple Admits Child Labour Used to Build iPods and iPhones

Technology giant Apple has admitted that child labour has been employed at some of the factories that build its iPods, computers and mobile phones. An audit found that at least eleven 15-year-old children were found to be working in three factories that supply Apple in the last year.

It said that child workers were now no longer being used at the sites, or were no longer underage. The exact location of the factories has not been identified. Apple has factories which supply parts in Taiwan, Singapore, Thailand, the U.S., the Czech Republic, Malaysia and the Philippines, but most of its products are assembled in China.

The audit also found one facility had attempted to conceal evidence of employing underage labour, while two others had falsified records relating to the number of working hours and days of rest employees were receiving. Apple has been repeatedly criticised for using factories which abuse workers and impose harsh conditions on workers.

Last week, 62 workers at a factory which makes parts for Apple and Nokia were hospitalised after being poisoned by n-hexane, a toxic chemical commonly used in technology which can cause muscular degeneration and blurred eyesight. The company has not commented on the problems at the plant, which is in Suzhou, China.

A spokesman for Wintek, which runs the factory, said that almost all of affected staff were back at work. The audit report revealed that at least 55 of factories which produced Apple goods were ignoring rules that staff must not work more than 60 hours a week.

One of the plants had falsified records for two years in a row in order to conceal that it was using child labour and overworking staff.

It said: 'When Apple investigated further, we uncovered additional records and conducted worker interviews that revealed excessive working hours and seven days of continuous work.

'Based on the repeat core violation and inadequate actions, Apple is terminating all business with this facility.'

The report also found 35 per cent of staff were paying incorrect wages, with 24 factories in China paying less than the national minimum wage of £76 a month. Three facilities were stopped from disposing of hazardous waste after they were found to have employed non-certified disposal companies.

And 20 facilities were found to be conducting pregnancy tests on workers before employing them. Apple has not stopped using those factories to make components. Last year, the company found a total of 25 child workers had been employed to make iPods and iPhones

The World's Most Expensive Inflight Meal

An airline passenger ate his £8,930 winning scratch card after he was told he could not claim the money immediately, it emerged today. The unnamed man was flying with Ryanair from Krakow in Poland to East Midlands Airport when he won 10,000 euros with the scratch card.

Crew on board the flight confirmed he had won the prize but told the passenger he would have to collect the jackpot directly from the company that runs the competition as it was such a large sum.
Ryanair said the man then became frustrated and started to eat his winning ticket, ruling out any chance he had of claiming the prize money which will now be donated to charity.

Stephen McNamara, a spokesman for the airline, said: "Passengers have always been delighted to claim their large cash prizes after returning home.

"Unfortunately our latest winner felt that we should have his 10,000 euros prize kicking around on the aircraft."

The airline is now asking passengers to vote online to decide where the money should go, after the win on Thursday. Voting will take place until March 5 at www.ryanair.com.

Mother Uses Twitter and YouTube to Chronicle Her Abortion

A woman who described her abortion in graphic detail on Twitter and YouTube has provoked a furious backlash. Angie Jackson, 27, has received death threats and been condemned by anti-abortion activists for her account of taking a pill to induce a termination.

Messages on her blog have labelled her a 'w****' and a 'baby killer'. Others have sent Bible verses and offers to adopt her four-year-old son, who has special needs. After a life-threatening first pregnancy, Miss Jackson, from Tampa, Florida, was advised by doctors not to have any more children.

She and her boyfriend found out she was pregnant again on February 13, just over three weeks after she conceived. Doctors said she could take the RU-486 drug, better known as the abortion pill, rather than have a surgical termination because the pregnancy had been detected so early.

Going under the name 'antitheistangie' on Twitter, Miss Jackson then went public with the details. In one post on February 21 she wrote: 'Cramps are getting a bit more persistent.' Other, more graphic posts followed.

In the YouTube video, she gives a similarly vivid account of her termination. She said she did so because she wanted to 'demystify' abortion for other women.

'I had made a decision when my son was born to try to not get pregnant again, and if that failed I'd planned that I would get an abortion if I needed one,' Miss Jackson added.

'My goal is to stay alive, and the best chance of that is to have an abortion. It is not shameful. It is not killing a child.'

Since Miss Jackson posted the messages the number of people following her progress on Twitter has more than doubled from 800.

She said: 'Emotionally, for me, doing this in the open and having the support of my friends has made this immeasurably easier.

'This has made me feel like it is an unfortunate experience but not something by which I have to define myself or my life by.

'I don't feel like I'm doing anything different from what I do every day.

'But now I have people calling me a killer, it's surreal.'

She added: 'I've just been astonished by the level of hatred and death threats and threats of violence against my son. It's been a very ugly side of people to see.

'I'm not trying to ignite a culture war, I'm just offering one person's personal experience and true story.'

The Family Research Council, which promotes 'faith, family and freedom', published a blog calling Jackson's decision a 'tragedy'.

Jeanne Monahan, the director for the Centre for Human Dignity at FRC, said she 'feels sorry' for Miss Jackson.

'I certainly don't agree with her decision to have a medical abortion,' she said.

'In my heart I believe it's not good for her or her baby.'

Abortion is one of the most controversial issues in the U.S., with attacks on clinics providing late-term terminations common.

Last year a mother of two, Irene Vilar, admitted in a book to being an 'abortion addict', having had 15 terminations. She too faced death threats after her account was published

PKS Uninvited to The Coalition Meeting

JAKARTA, - The Democratic Party reportedly had a meeting with its coalition partners at the residence of Syarif Hassan, one of the party's high officials, Sunday evening. Democratic Party fraction chief Anas Urbaningrum also stated that there has been an agreement between the coalition partners regarding the Century Bank case. However, the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), according to its secretary general, Anis Matta, didn't know about the meeting.

"I don't know about the discussion last night. I didn't attend it," stated Anis, Monday, at the House of Representatives, Jakarta.

Anis also stated that he couldn't say whether any PKS high official attended the meeting. "I was out of town."

Deputy speaker of the House ensures that the meetings by the coalition leader won't deter his party's opinion regarding the final conclusion of the inquiry committee on Century Bank. "Golkar stated that it won't change. PKS won't change either."

When questioned whether PKS's absence was because it had been removed from the coalition, Anis was reluctant to respond. He opined that PKS is only bound to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. "The communication we consider official is with Mr. SBY. Aside from that, it's unofficial. And so far the communication with Mr. SBY is going well

Laptop launched to aid computer novices

People confused and frustrated by computers can now turn to a laptop called Alex built just for them.

Based on Linux, the laptop comes with simplified e-mail, web browsing, image editing and office software.

Those who sign up for Alex pay £39.95 a month for telephone support, software updates and broadband access.

Its creators hope the laptop and its simple suite of software proves to be a popular alternative to the Windows and Mac operating systems.

"Alex is not designed as a super-computer," said Barney Morrison-Lyons, head of technology at The Broadband Computer Company which is behind Alex. "We're not buying into the current computer market
The idea behind Alex was to make using a computer a "simple and enjoyable" experience, said Andy Hudson, one of the founders of the company.

Subscribers to Alex receive a USB stick which contains user-encrypted data and enables them to log on to their desktop from any Alex computer.

For their monthly fee, customers also get anti-virus software and 10GB of storage space on the Broadband Computer Company's servers.

Broadband is supplied by Southampton-based ISP Murphx.

More than £2.5m has been invested in developing the product, the company claims.

"We're the little guy, we know that," said co-founder Harry Drnec, who is credited with turning the energy drink company Red Bull into a profitable business in the UK.

Back to basics

As well as communication tools such as e-mail, Alex comes loaded with a suite of open office software including applications compatible with Microsoft's Excel and PowerPoint file formats.

The desktop is more comprehensive than that of Simplicity, a computer aimed at older people launched by TV presenter Valerie Singleton in 2009.

Mr Hudson said the company also intends to launch an application store for Alex for customers who want to add more features and functions to their computer.

"People who love Linux will be keen to develop for this," he said.

The BBC's technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones said that Alex was an ambitious concept.

"Alex is trying to do three things: win new people over to the internet, introduce a new - and more expensive - way of using computers, and take on the might of Microsoft," he said.

"If the company succeeds it will be a huge boost for the cause of Linux computing."

VISUAL IMPACT TOYOTA PRIUS

Many Prius fans might attribute its weird wedge shape to the aerodynamic benefits it provides. Toyota engineers also agree with this fact, since the third generation of the Prius is also one of the most aerodynamically efficient production cars. With a drag coefficient of 0.25, that "flat pancake" shape actually has a purpose. So, you can not call it simply ugly, it's more like "form follows function".

Of course, other manufacturers are achieving similar drag coefficient results without appealing to such extreme styling. On the other hand, Toyota knows that the Prius's shape has transformed into a real attention-grabber for the environmentally-conscious driving one, so it's also good PR, not just Cd, behind the turtle look.

The front is actually pretty good-looking, even though it retains quite a lot of design cues from other modern bland Toyotas. Still, it's a mixture between your average boring Toyota look and a more youthful and especially sportier appearance. This was further amplified by the seventeen-inch alloy wheels, which look very "autobahn-ready". The main design feature separating it from its siblings is the blue hue inside the badge, which is Toyota's geeky way of differentiating its hybrids from the regular models in the lineup.

Getting to the side of the Prius is where things get messy. The car's profile is pretty much its main way of announcing with trumpets, confetti and firecrackers the fact that it's a hybrid. Which is both a good and a bad thing. Good for all the environmentalists who cannot tell a car from a vacuum cleaner and bad for all the real car guys out there. On a personal note, we think the side is an absolute hideous representation of a correct Kamback design.

The rear is pretty non-homogeneous also, with the twin rear windshield and the tall Lexus IS/Toyota Altezza taillights. The rear bumper, on the other hand, looks more like an aftermarket "tuner" option that a productions-specced piece. All in all, the opinions about the way the Prius looks are pretty divided and that is why we can give it neither a top mark, nor a very low one.

Microsoft offers web browser choice to IE users

It follows a legal agreement between Microsoft and Europe's Competition Commission in December 2009.

Microsoft committed to letting Windows PC users across Europe install the web browser of their choice, rather than having Microsoft IE as a default.

Figures suggest that over half the world's internet users have IE.

Testing for the update is already underway in the UK, Belgium and France.

The software update choice will arrive automatically for Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 customers,

according to a blog post by Dave Heiner, Microsoft's vice president and deputy general counsel.

The blog also contains screen grabs of the message as it will appear.

"Users who get the choice screen will be free to choose any browser or stick with the browser they have, as they prefer," wrote Mr Heiner.

Google Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera are the alternative browsers that people will be offered.

"Millions of people who have never really thought about which browser to use will now be forced to make a choice," said BBC technology correspondent Rory Cellan-Jones on his blog.

"That presents Microsoft's rivals with a unique marketing opportunity."

Mozilla Foundation chair Mitchell Baker described the news as "an important milestone towards helping people take control of their online lives."

Software maker sues China on piracy accusation

A U.S. software maker sued China and seven major computer makers Tuesday alleging piracy of its Internet filtering software.

Cybersitter LLC, whose software is designed to help parents filter content seen by children, seeks $2.2 billion in damages in the federal lawsuit filed Tuesday in Los Angeles.
"

The company alleges that the Chinese copied its codes and incorporated them into software used to block Chinese citizens' access to sites deemed politically undesirable by the government. Seven computer manufacturers, including Sony, Lenovo, and Toshiba, also were sued for distributing the Chinese program with PCs sold in the country.

"I don't think I have ever seen such clear-cut stealing," said attorney Gregory Fayer, who represents Santa Barbara-based Cybersitter.

He said the alleged piracy was discoered by a university researcher who posted a report on Internet filtering programs online.

Fayer said Chinese software makers appeared to have downloaded the program from the Cybersitter server and copied more than 3,000 lines of code, then incorporated it into their program, Green Dam Youth Escort.

'They did a sloppy job of copying," said Fayer, noting that they included directions on how to get to the Cybersitter site.

Last year, the Chinese government issued an order requiring computer manufacturers to pre-install or supply "Green Dam Youth Escort" software with PCs made for sale in China.

Cina later backed down after a major outcry from Chinese citizens and computer companies. Although Chinese authorities had said the "Green Dam" system is needed to block access to violent and obscene material, analysts who reviewed the program say it also filters out material the government considers politically objectionable.

The lawsuit says that while the mandate was reversed, the computer makers continued to distribute Green Dam with its computers in China even after learning the software was pirated.

Those named in the lawsuit were Sony, Lenovo, Toshiba, Acer, AsusteK, BenQ and Haier.

The complaint alleges misappropriation of trade secrets, unfair competition, copyright infringement and conspiracy. It also claims the Chinese software makers broke U.S. criminal laws governing economic espionage.

A Lenovo spokeswoman said by e-mail that the company was unable to comment on pending litigation. A call to Acer representatives was not immediately returned.

A representative for Sony declined comment on the lawsuit. A Toshiba representative was unreachable after hours. Companies in Asia were unreachable due to time difference.

Fayer said that none of the defendants had been served with the lawsuit yet.

He said Cybersitter, a family-owned company, is seeking damages for royalties due on its product, which sells for $39.95 a copy. He said the case could be "a watershed for the protection of American intellectual property internationally."

"We don't make many widgets anymore," he said. "What we have to offer the world is our ingenuity and creativity, our ideas and what lawyers call intellectual property. From small companies like Cybersitter to Microsoft to motion pictures and the music industry, these are the products we have to offer the world. It is important that they be protected.

uBoom: Ample boom but little subtlety

uBoom www.asus.com

I don’t know about you, but I am increasingly resorting to the web to find music to play while I work.

I will visit YouTube and play songs like Only Memories Are Our Friends sung by Heintje, or “When We Are Young” by Solomon King. These are not exoctly the songs people from my generation listen too, I know. I have also found a website solely dedicated to Elvis Presley’s impressive collection of songs.

Listening to the music on my desktop PC at home is not a problem, as I have hooked it up to a great sounding Aiwa compo. However, when I travel and want to listen to the same music on my notebook computer, the experience becomes a nuisance.

Some multimedia notebooks produce acceptable sound, but are usually bulky and not really suitable for travel. Most of the time, the sound quality of notebooks and netbooks is similar to that of toy cell phones. Yes, I could use a pair of high-end headphones, but after a while my ears will feel hot.

When talking about portable speakers, the challenge is to find the balance between size and richness of sound. Some computer speakers made by Logitech, Altec Lansing and many others offer good sound reproduction, but they are simply not for the road. Even wallet drainers such as MusicMonitor from Bose and BeoLab 4 from B&O do not completely satisfy demanding audiophile tastes.

Recently, ASUS Indonesia let me play around with their new, one-piece 2.1 speaker called uBoom.
The look is pretty futuristic with the brushed aluminum body and black plastic grill on top. The drivers are on the opposite sides and are enclosed in black plastic covers.

The 2.1 model and its bigger brother, uBoom Q, include a subwoofer in addition to the pair of drivers.
More interestingly, as shown in these speakers and many others, the current trend is to connect the speakers to the notebook or desktop PC using a USB 2.0 cable, not an analog one.

If we have a Windows Vista or Windows 7 machine, no drivers are needed either. Older operating systems may require special software drivers to send the audio signal via the USB connection.

Now, let us have a closer look at the uBoom. I was told the unit I played around with was the first sample to arrive in Indonesia. Consequently, it is reasonable to expect many of the shortcomings that I have come across may be rectified in future shipped products.

The uBoom is pretty heavy to throw into an overnight bag, actually. I would suggest ASUS add a shoulder strap to make toting it around more comfortable.

At the back we find all the connection ports. They include the USB port, an RCA jack for analog input, another RCA jack for a microphone, a power switch and a power port.

In front, there is a recess on the tubular resonant chamber to place the rear of our notebook. The good thing is it keep the notebook from warming up too much and give us a better typing angle.

Too bad the recess is not deep enough to support a notebook with the screen fully opened.

During my test, I connected the supplied USB cable to my Windows Vista notebook, plugged the AC adaptor, inserted The Beatles’ Rubber Soul and pumped the volume up. This speaker can produce quite powerful sound.

It is not heart thumping, but it is enough to fill a small hall. Still, I think the balance between the low, mid and high ranges should be fine-tuned further in order to produce richer sound.

I played Chopin’s Piano Sonata No. 2 from my Time Life Music collection, and the sound was rather flat.

As far as design goes, I do have a list of other wishes. Having all the connections at the back is great, as it gives us a clean front side. Unfortunately, the power switch is just a small mechanical slide switch.
As it is a great looking speaker, I think ASUS should have used a digital switch instead. In addition, it should be placed in front.

Inside the chamber is a blue light that shines when the unit is powered up. There is no other indicator to tells us it is on. More annoying is definitely the absence of volume control.

We can adjust the volume using Windows mixer, which requires us to click on the small audio icon on the system tray.

It can be quite tricky, especially if you want to have just the right volume. An alternative is to use the notebook Fn andFx key combinations.

My preference would be to use a multimedia keyboard that comes with a master volume control. The best solution would be for ASUS to add a remote control as an accessory. A lot of good computer speakers now come with a remote control.

This speaker is not truly ready to compete with others from Logitech and Altec Lansing, but it certainly has an attractive look and a lot of sonic power. If you just want to listen to YouTube music in your hotel room, or give a presentation in a small hall, this may be a good choice. But, if you want to enjoy the velvety voice of Jim Reeves, you should understand much larger cabinets and drivers are needed.

House Century committee visits BPK

The House of Representatives inquiry committee on the Bank Century bailout visited the Supreme Audit Agency (BPK) office in Gatot Subroto, Central Jakarta, on Thursday, in relation to BPK's audit report on the bank.

A member of the committee, Maruarar Sirait from the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), said that the visit aims to discuss about acquiring copy of the BPK investigative audit report on the case.

Also seen attending the meeting was the committee chairman, Idrus Marham from the Golkar Party, his deputies - PDI-P's Gayus Lumbuun and Democratic Party's Yahya Secawiria - and BPK Chairman Hadi Purnomo.

"The report consists of 196 bundles, each has around 200 pages," Hadi said.

The committee is assigned to probe into the case, which revolves around a bailout that rose ten times to Rp 6.76 trillion (US$716 million) from its original estimate.

Dangdut singer Inul going pop

JAKARTA: The country’s dangdut darling Inul Daratista, renowned for her gyrating dance moves, is now trying her luck in pop music.

Inul has been lying low since mid 2003, when she shot to fame with her so-called controversial “drill dance”, which even angered Rhoma Irama, the grand old man of Indonesia’s own brand of Arab and Indian influenced folk music.

She’s apparently been busy preparing her new single Kasih Tak Termiliki (Unattainable Love).

“The song was made by Irwan Stinky. The genre’s pop,” she said as quoted by kapanlagi.com.

“I’m not running away from dangdut. I’m just taking a chance. This is a good experience.”

Inul said she has long dreamed of having her own pop single. She is not leaving the world of dangdut, but wants to add something different to her discography.

“I finally have a pop single. There’s something different there, I’m surprised and maybe my lis-teners will be surprised too. I’m just adding to my portfolio. I’ve tried dangdut, rock and now pop. I’m looking for new experiences,” she said.

The woman from Pasuruan, East Java, has built on her success by opening a chain of karaoke lounges and becoming a music producer. She’s married to Adam Suseno and last year gave birth to a son, Yusuf Ivander Damares.

Wiliardi gets 12 years in prison for murder, escapes execution

The South Jakarta District Court found former South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Wiliardi Wizard guilty of involvement in the murder of state company director Nasruddin Zulkarnaen Thursday and sentenced him to 12 years in prison.

The verdict is more lenient than the death sentence sought by the state prosecutors, but Wiliardi’s lawyers said they would consider an appeal, saying their client was the victim of a conspiracy.

Reading out the verdict, presiding judge Artha Theresia said Wiliardi was convincingly proved to have misused his authority, provided the opportunity and conspired to commit a murder.

The same court will hand down verdicts on former anticorruption commission leader Antasari Azhar, businessman Sigid Haryo Wibisono and Jerry Hermawan Lo today.

Trains from Japan to arrive in March

Commuters in the city and surrounding areas will see the arrival of 10 of 40 used-electric train carriages imported from Japan in March, an official said.

“Every month, starting March, we will receive 10 carriages until June,” corporate secretary of PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ) Makmur Syaheran told The Jakarta Post.

The imported carriages, produced between the 1980s and 1990s, would add to the existing 386 electric trains. Makmur refused to reveal the trains’ prices.

The KCJ serves commuting routes across the Greater Jakarta area, including tracks linking the city’s main stations to Serpong, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi in Greater Jakarta.

Makmur said the KCJ, which has become a subsidiary of state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api (KA) since August 2008, tried to improve service quality by providing more carriages and repairing a number of train stations.

This month, he added, his company would open a bidding process for another procurement of 48 used carriages from Japan.

“We will procure carriages for electric trains every year. This is part of our effort to increase comfort quality,” he said.

With regard to the renovation of 17 train stations, Makmur said, this month it had entered the first phase, with Juanda station in Central Jakarta, for example, to be equipped with new benches.

He added that street vendors sprawling at the platform would be relocated.

Makmur said the KCJ would also develop an electronic ticketing system to many trains to curb the number of illegal passengers.

A resident of Depok Saleh Purwanto who commuted daily to his workplace in Jakarta, said he would welcome the imported used trains, saying that the news had been long awaited.

He said, however, that the additional number of trains would be meaningless if the KCJ did not improve their daily operational condition.

He said he expected on-time arrivals and departures of the electric train, but was often disappointed when faced with sudden schedule delays.

“Recently, the delay often happens Monday,” he said.

He said the delays were usually caused by train damage and troubled signals.

“If the problems are known, why doesn’t the company provide backup trains or evacuate passengers when the train stops before arriving at its destination?” he said.

Volunteer group KRLmania urged PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek that the imported trains replaced economy-class electric trains that were unreliable.

The editorial page of the group’s website stated that PT KA should work on improving the signaling system of the electric trains, making it more reliable.

The KCJ currently manages 170 kilometers of railway lines and 56 railway stations.

It was reported that approximately 400,000 passengers from Greater Jakarta now use the trains every day, an increase from 325,000 last year. The KCJ targets to attract 1 million passengers per day by 2012. Furthermore, in 2014 it targets to carry 3 million passengers per day.

In order to improve its service, the company revealed that it would take all non-AC economy-class trains out of service and replace them with AC economy-class trains by 2011.

So far, more than 40 stations allow passengers to easily pass through without tickets.

It is common to see passengers on train roofs during peak hour. Incidents where illegal passengers were electrocuted were reported in 2009.

More stylish, powerful tech tools from ASUS

The wise gurus tell us we should stick to our core business. They also tell us that unless we grow, we will die. In the technology world, the challenge is that to grow very often means expanding our core competence. So, what are we supposed to do actually?

ASUS, my favorite computer and computer component makers, seems to combine the two. Remember the Nuvifone G60? It was unfortunately an unsuccessful attempt to enter the cell phone market, in which both Garmin and ASUS are still trying to accumulate the kind of expertise and experience that industry stalwarts such as LG Mobile, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony Ericsson already possess.

However, as ASUS and Garmin are strong in their respective competency — Garmin in GPS and ASUS in gadget design and manufacturing — they may eventually succeed.

In the case of ASUS, the more obvious strength lies in its leadership in designing and manufacturing computer components and combining them into reliable, standard-setting products. Quite a few ASUS products, which incorporate the latest technologies, became highlights at last month’s Computer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.

This time around, the product I really like is the new eee Box PC EB1501. Too bad, though, Cynthia Yunita from ASUS Indonesia told me this model might never be available here.

I had reviewed the first version before and I was really enamored with it, but this reincarnation has a DVD drive (usually called ODD) and it is capable of pumping High Definition video (1080p) directly to a TV screen with the help of its NVIDIA Ion graphics subsystem. Unlike the early Intel Atom N270-based eee Box, this small and very quiet nettop runs on an Intel Atom Dual Core N330 running at 1.6 GHz.

What amazes me particularly is the variety of connections this tiny box provides. To cater to almost every need, the eee Box has HDMI, S/PDIF and RJ-45 for wired ethernet connection to a network, 802.11/n for wireless connections, D-Sub for a VGA monitor, eSata for additional storage, a card reader, audio ports and six USB ports.

The audio subsystem can be connected to a 5:1 speaker configuration for a great home theater experience. I guess the reason it is not going to be released in Indonesia is the hefty price we would have to pay for it.

Any ASUS store is also a gamer’s paradise. Mind you, gamers compete against each other in building the fastest computers with blazing graphics. Who can overclock their system the most? And when it comes to shopping for gaming components, Indonesian gamers seem to have dozens of money-growing trees in their backyards.

Even sixth-graders are familiar with the best components and willing and able to spend far more than professional aeronautics engineers or architects when it comes to buying super-duper computer components.

ASUS’ focus on this high-end, deep-pocket user segments is reflected in the formation of Republic of Gamers (ROG). In the ROG category, for example, we can find the Matrix GTX285 graphics subsystem and the RAMPAGE III Extreme motherboard.

This motherboard is targeted for overclockers – those who enjoy forcing their systems to run faster than their manufacturers have rated them. This is usually achieved by tweaking voltage and frequency.

An interesting feature is the Remote Control Bluetooth (RC Bluetooth), which allows us to fine-tune and control various parameters on the motherboard, wirelessly. All we need is a Bluetooth-capable PDA or cell phone. No need to manually adjust the BIOS settings.

By the way, if you happen to belong to this group of very fortunate people, you can visit http://rog.asus.com/ and see what your money can buy.

ASUS has also expanded its style choice. Now they have the Karim Rashid Seashell collection to accompany models on the catwalk. ASUS has even collaborated with Bang & Olufson in implementing top-end audio technologies in its notebook computers to attract consumers’ attention. The NX90 notebook, for example, incorporates Bang & Olufson’s ICEPower technology. There is also a new version of the eee Top PC, the ET2010AG all-in-one system, which is only 13.7 mm thick.

Another very interesting product is the eee Keyboard. This is a rather new product category, comprising a full-size keyboard and a five-inch multi-touch screen in one single frame. It is actually a complete nettop PC with a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom processor. The video signal is sent via wireless HDMI, so we can display it on any monitor, including our LCD or LED TV monitor.

Talking about monitors, ASUS has long been making high-quality LCD screens. One of the latest products is the Designo MS series, which is supported at the back only by a ring stand. Tasteful style is just one small aspect of these monitors. More impressive is its 50,000:1 contrast ratio and 2 millisecond response time.

Meanwhile, ASUS O!Play Air HDP-R3 media player helps us collect media files in a wide range of formats from various sources such as wireless Network Attach Storage (NAS) and flash memory cards inserted into the card reader slot. It then lets us play these media files back in the order we choose or in shuffle mode.

Another product I hope I can test drive very soon is ASUS Cine5 Soundbar Speaker. As the “5” in the product name would lead us to guess, this set of speakers can enhance the stereo audio from a PC to 5.1 surround sound, which seems to be the standard today.

Speaking of standards, we are now still using USB 2.0, which provides us with a data transfer rate of 480 megabytes per second. Work has been in progress to develop the USB 3.0 standard, which supports transfer speeds of up to 5 gigabytes per second.

Again, ASUS was the first component maker to incorporate support for USB 3.0 in several of its latest motherboards. Its P6X58D Premium motherboard was the first to be certified by the USB Implementation Forum (USB-IF).

There is a long list of other interesting products from this Taiwanese company, and most of the time it is an enjoyable experience for me to play around with them.

Apple strikes again with multi-touch tablet technology

Too good: Tech boffins examine the Apple iPad after its unveiling in San Francisco. AP/Marcio Jose Sanchez

Steve Jobs recently boasted that Apple had become the global leader of mobile devices topping major brands such as Sony, Samsung and even Nokia.

Well these big boys haven’t seen this yet but there’s an imminent possibility that iPad will rock their world even more. Sony introduced their netbook lineup not so long ago and Samsung is also in the netbook market now, so competition is stiff if not cramped with other big brands such as Acer, HP and Asus.

With iPad, Apple got a shot at becoming the leader in the convergence PC-smartphone market.

The third category, as Jobs put it, comes in Apple’s style. Apple’s stocks rose after the announcement of iPad, as the market concurred with Jobs’ vision to provide “the most advanced technology in a magical and revolutionary device at an unbelievable price”.

What this translates into, as I try to comprehend Jobs’ mind, is that Tom, Dick and Harry would get a migraine if they did not take a look at the iPad before deciding to buy a portable mini-computing device like a netbook.

Apple’s video demo in the latest special event exposes the iPad as an amazing device. The future of tablet computing solutions is indeed in multi-touch technology. Combined with an awesome display and accelerometer, smooth operating system, 10 hours of battery life, it comes with a digital compass
and assisted GPS, and most importantly, its price tag is in the netbook category.

There we have a no-brainer tablet ready to embrace the new decade in this amazing millennium.

The iPad will ship in two models, one with WiFi and the other comes extra with 3G. These models will have a memory module of 16 GB, 32 GB or 64 GB. The price range will be US$499-829, much lower than what most people predicted.

Revolutionary, again: The iPad is shown after it was unveiled at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, on Jan. 27, 2010.

So, can the iPad beat netbooks?

That depends on what you’re looking for.

The iPad is great for web browsing and multimedia applications such as viewing photos and playing videos. The availability of applications specifically built for the iPad and compatibility of hundreds of thousands of iPhone applications mean that it has tremendous potential in terms of productivity and fun as a portable device.

There will be a bookstore to compete with Amazon’s Kindle.

All these abilities are great, but if you are looking for a cheap and light digital word processor that can
surf the Internet, the netbook may become the best answer for that purpose.

Nothing can beat the convenience of using a built-in real keyboard to type, albeit its slow, short-battery life and small-screen syndrome are typical of netbooks.

Furthermore, connectivity is not an issue with the netbook. It has a USB socket to plug in any device, a hard drive for boosting storage, flash disk, printer and camera.

The iPad? The only USB device Apple supports is a camera connection kit and we all know Apple’s reservation not to provide the best connectivity solution for the iPhone. It took about two years before iPhone users had the ability to use a Bluetooth stereo headset.

Like the iPhone, the iPad uses iTunes to transfer files so don’t build your hopes for the ability to transfer every downloaded file to your PC and Mac (assuming the iPad allows users to download files onto the web browser in the first place).

Some creative members of Apple user’s community designed methods to access the iPhone’s file
system.

What many users want is total control of their device so that’s why we have seen this happening with Amazon’s Kindle. Let’s hope Apple sorts this out before swarming the world market in the next few months.

Even when we question its connectivity, the iPad is still an amazing device, overshadowing the netbook in many respects.

Its multi-touch feature and awesome 9.7 LED backlit glossy widescreen display alone should attract plenty attention if the international market price line is as good as the US. Apple has even prepared the iPad for real keyboard accessories with a built-in dock.

Another great accessory that comes with it is the iPad case, which not only protects the device but can also position it to allow typing ease with the multi-touch screen.

There’s no telling about the price and we all know Apple branded accessories are not cheap.

More magic that Apple uses to compel people to buy the iPad is its version of iWorks at an affordable price: $10 each for word processing, presentation and spreadsheet programs.

Without support for USB devices, Apple leaves us in the dark about how users can properly print files after they spend their time on iWork.

iPad may not be an efficient solution for those whose primary concern is to work on word processor and print it without much of hassle. With these shortcomings, the iPad may establish a nice global market, especially in countries where people have more to spend on gadgets.

But in Indonesia, it may not stand out against the netbook that every Budi, Adi and Rudi would look for when buying their first laptop. In fact, the iPad needs a computer; a netbook or otherwise, in order to run iTunes.

To be a champ here in Indonesia, the iPad has to pose itself as a cost-effective primary device that works not only as a nice and super cool gadget.

IPAD panen kritik

Mulai Resolusi Layar hingga tanpa Kamera

Tanpa dukungan Adobe Flash

Google mengumumkan iPad memiliki fitur flash. Namun, kenyataannya, iPad hanya dilengkapi HTML5 standar konten multimedia, termasuk video streaming seperti pada YouTube.

Tanpa port USB
